The Call of the Forest

We live near the National Forest. It is an enchanting place to me -- full of mysterious paths and vibrant colors. The air exudes a peacefulness that is unforgettable. I often try to carve out a part of my day to spend some time there. I run down the dirt roads with the wind at my back and the tops of the trees swaying to the rhythm of my heart.

I love the seas of ferns -- the rich greens spiked with blackened tree trunks rising like giants walking in the morning sun.

My family and I have been taking drives here lately. We pile in the truck -- the kids and the dog in the back, grown-ups in the front.

We just drive. We find a turn in the forest and we take it. The path might only be wide enough for one vehicle, but that's all we need.

Today, Hopers said, "This is sooo fun! I love the wind in my hair!!"

Noodle quietly snuggles next to her dog and enjoys the ride.

And of course, her dog enjoys it a little, too.
